Bed Type Follows The Part

Flat bed for weight
A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

Slant bed for chips and speed
Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

Vertical for diameter
Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

Y-axis when it saves a setup
A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

What does "swing over bed" actually mean when choosing a lathe?
It is twice the distance from spindle centreline to the bed ways — the largest diameter that clears the bed while rotating. It is not the working limit: the cross slide reduces usable clearance, so always check the maximum turning diameter as well. Across this range the swing runs from 240 mm on the small machines to 2.5 m on the heavy series.
Flat bed, slant bed or vertical — how do I pick the right lathe type?
Bed type follows the part. A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work, damps the cut, and suits shafts and rolls that need a steady rest. A slant bed drops chips into the conveyor and puts the turret closer to the centreline, which suits repeat production of medium parts. Once the part is heavier than it is long — flanges, rings, wheels — it belongs on a vertical table, not between centres.
How long a workpiece can these lathes take between centres?
The heavy horizontal series takes work up to 20 m between centres, with bed lengths built in steps and steady rests supporting slender sections. For any long shaft, quote the finished length plus chucking allowance, and say whether the diameter is constant — that decides how many steadies the job needs.
Do the CNC and conventional lathes share the same build quality?
They are built on the same cast iron beds with the same hardened and ground ways — the conventional machines are not a budget line with lighter castings. The difference is control and drive, not structure, which is why a manual machine here still holds its geometry through years of repair and one-off work.
