Bed Type Follows The Part
Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

Flat bed for weight
A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

Slant bed for chips and speed
Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

Vertical for diameter
Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

Y-axis when it saves a setup
A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

What should I check first when sizing a manual engine lathe?
The largest diameter and the longest part you will actually mount — swing over bed for the first, distance between centres for the second — then the spindle bore against your bar stock. These machines run from 630 mm swing upward with bed lengths in steps, so quote the real part sizes rather than rounding up "to be safe": excess bed costs money and floor space every day after.
Do the CW-series lathes have a gap bed for oversize flanges?
The models that carry a gap state it on their specification page, with the extra swing available over a short section in front of the chuck. A gap rescues the occasional oversize flange on a shaft job; if flanges are your daily work, a vertical lathe is the honest answer and we will say so.
How do these manual machines hold accuracy over years of repair work?
The same way the CNC range does: one-piece cast beds aged before machining, hardened and ground ways, hardened and ground headstock gears. Geometry is measured before shipment and the report travels with the machine, so ten years in, drift is a number you can re-measure rather than an argument.
Can a conventional horizontal lathe still take very long shafts?
Yes — the heavy manual frames take work up to 20 m between centres with steady rests carrying the span, the same capability as the CNC heavy series. Long-shaft repair is precisely the work that keeps manual machines in service: one-off, urgent, and not worth programming.
