Choosing A Lathe

Bed Type Follows The Part

Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

  1. Flat bed for weight

    A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

  2. Slant bed for chips and speed

    Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

  3. Vertical for diameter

    Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

  4. Y-axis when it saves a setup

    A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

When is a vertical lathe the right call instead of a horizontal?

When the part is heavier than it is long. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases sit on a table with gravity working for you, not hanging between centres working against you. If your crane spends more time supporting the part than loading it, the work belongs here.

What table sizes do these vertical lathes and VTCs cover?

Tables run from 1 m to 8 m across single and double column machines. Size the table to the fixture, not just the part — and check the table load rating against the finished weight plus workholding, because a dense forging can max a table long before it runs out of diameter.

What turns a vertical lathe into a vertical turning centre here?

A BT50 tool magazine and driven tooling on the larger machines, so milled flats, drilled flanges and tapped holes finish in the same clamping as the turning. That saves a second setup on exactly the parts that are most awkward to re-clamp accurately.

Single column or double column — what decides it?

Diameter and rigidity. Single column machines handle the smaller tables economically; once the table and part grow, the double column closes the force loop and keeps the ram stiff across the full swing. The crossover sits where your part diameter approaches the single column machine's comfortable reach — send the drawing and we will place it.
