Bed Type Follows The Part

Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

  1. Flat bed for weight

    A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

  2. Slant bed for chips and speed

    Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

  3. Vertical for diameter

    Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

  4. Y-axis when it saves a setup

    A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

Machining Centres Questions, Answered

Vertical, horizontal or gantry machining centre — what decides it?

Count the faces, then weigh the part. Machined from one side with quick setups, a vertical centre costs less and is easier to load. Three or four faces in one clamping, and a horizontal with a pallet changer pays for itself in setup time. Once the part outgrows any table — long frames, beds, rails — the gantry brings the bridge to the work instead.

How much bigger than my part should the table be?

Allow for the fixture, not just the part: as a working rule the table wants roughly one and a half times the part footprint once workholding is on it, and Z travel has to clear the longest tool at the part's tallest point. Table load rating matters as much as size — a small dense casting can exceed a table long before it runs out of room.

Box ways or linear guides on a machining centre?

Box ways carry a wide sliding contact on an oil film, which damps vibration and suits heavy roughing, interrupted cuts and tough material. Linear guides roll instead of slide, so they move faster and accelerate harder — right for high-speed contouring and light alloy. Both are built here, and the honest answer for most shops is whichever matches the heaviest cut they take weekly.

Are the knee-type turret mills part of the same quality system?

Yes — the turret mills for toolroom and jobbing work go through the same geometric inspection before shipment as the machining centres, on the same aged castings. A toolroom machine that will square a fixture for the big centres has to be trusted the same way.
