Choosing A Lathe
Bed Type Follows The Part
Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

Flat bed for weight
A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

Slant bed for chips and speed
Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

Vertical for diameter
Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

Y-axis when it saves a setup
A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

Conventional Lathes Questions, Answered
Why buy a manual lathe in the CNC era at all?
Repair, one-offs and training. A repair bay needs a machine that goes from crate to cutting in minutes without a programme; an apprentice learns feel on handwheels, not on a keyboard. For those jobs a manual machine on proper castings is cheaper to buy, simpler to keep, and never waits for a programmer.
Are these conventional lathes built lighter than the CNC range?
No — same cast iron beds, same hardened and ground ways, same headstocks with hardened and ground gears. The saving is in drive and control, not in iron. That is deliberate: a repair-shop lathe gets the roughest work in the building, not the gentlest.
What size work do the manual machines cover?
From 630 mm swing on the smaller engine lathes up to 2.5 m swing, taking work as long as 20 m on the big frames. The group also includes programmable vertical lathes and a manual pipe threading machine, so "conventional" here covers the full size range, not just bench work.
Which thread types can these lathes cut?
Metric, imperial, module and diametral pitch threads from the gearbox — the full set, without change-gear arithmetic for the common cases. For oilfield tapers there is a dedicated manual pipe threading lathe with a taper attachment in this group.
